Partial Reflection MF Radar

National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) Partial Reflection
Medium-Frequency MF) Radar is currently operating near the front gate of
Poker Flat Research Range. The radar transmits
radio pulses vertically into the upper atmosphere at 2.43 MHz. Returns will
be produced by stratified layers and irregularities in the ionospheric
D-region, to deduce height profiles of neutral atmosphere winds
at 60-90 km.
The Poker Flat radar hardware is manufactured by Atmospheric Radar Systems Pty. Ltd. (ATRAD) of Adelaide, Australia. NICT also operates 2-MHz band experiments at Yamagawa (31N) in southern Japan, and at Wakkanai (45N) in northern Japan. The Poker Flat MF radar operates as part of the cooperative project between NICT in Japan and the Geophysical Institute . |
